Cases so Absurd you won’t Believe they Happened

We’ve all heard the story of the woman who sued McDonald’s after spilling hot coffee on herself…and won. As you might have guessed, there are tons of cases like this, full of outrageous claims and even more ridiculous verdicts. 1. Pearson vs. Chung, A.K.A. “The Pants Lawsuit”
In Washington, D.C. in 2005 a Judge took his pants to a dry cleaners, and all hell broke loose. The return of the pants was delayed, upsetting the Judge, and when they were returned, he claimed they were not his. The dispute escalated quickly, with the Judge demanding compensation for the “lost” pants, an amount he deemed to be $1,000. The owner of the shop refused, and the Judge claimed mental suffering, inconvenience and discomfort due to the absence of his trousers, this time demanding $67 million in compensation!

The case dragged on for three more years, with the Chungs offering smaller figures and Pearson rejecting them. In the end, Pearson apparently gave up, realizing that the Supreme Court had more important things to do.

2. Kerr Vs Ho, A.K.A. “The Beckham Jersey Lawsuit”
Two friends went to a soccer game at Hawaii’s Aloha Stadium in 2008, and left as bitter enemies. When superstar David Beckham signed and handed over his number 23 jersey to the two boys, a disagreement sparked. Unable to decide who got to keep the jersey, the boys’ parents stepped in, and both families threatened legal consequences.

The families sniped back and forth for two months, then the whole thing just sort of faded away.

3. Joseph Vs Kraft, A.K.A. “The Oreo Lawsuit”
In 2003 a man named Stephen Joseph decided to sue Kraft over the presence of trans-fat in their Oreo cookies. He cited the link between trans-fat and heart disease, and demanded that children not be sold Oreos.

This one was resolved quickly: Oreo promised to reduce the amount of trans-fat in the cookies, and Joseph got tired of all the media attention. The case was dropped.
